Clinical Services
Clinical services include an outpatient clinic at Ganiyari. This clinic is self sufficient, and includes dispensary, radiology and laboratory services. It has provided more than 250,000 extremely low-cost consultations to over 105,000 patients drawn from more than 1200 villages/towns of the district and beyond.
The Ganiyari campus also houses an inpatient ward with 15 beds and an operation theatre complex which includes 3 major operation theatres and a labour room. This complex has been open since June 2001, and has provided high-quality surgical services to more than 10,000 patients.
Three subcentres in forest village clusters about 45-75 km from Bilaspur serve more than 150 forest and forest-fringe villages. These centres are manned by two senior health workers each and are supported by doctor based outreach clinics every week.
Community Health Program
Our community health program provides preventive and curative services, through the efforts of 104 trained village health workers, elected by their respective villages, in 53 tribal villages.
These women take part in efforts to control undernutrition, malaria, and tuberculosis and provide rational first contact care using 20 different kinds of medicines, and referral advice when required.
Appropriate Technology
JSS develops, adapts, and validates low-cost health care and diagnostic technology appropriate for application in rural areas. These technologies are intended to be used by village health workers, the community, and by the public health centres.
These efforts have led to the creation of low cost diagnostic kits for diagnosis of anaemia, urinary infections, detection of pneumonia by village health workers and sickle cell disease, among others. Also developed has been technology and aids for prevention of health problems like outbreaks of diarrhoea with kits for detection of fecal contamination of drinking water, UV based disinfection systems which can run on cycle power and modular kits for safe conduct of delivery and post-partum care of mother and child.
JSS also develops appropriate field and clinical practices based on operational, observational, and action based research into priority public health problems, particularly childhood illnesses, tuberculosis, malaria and leprosy.
Training, Advocacy and Resource Group
JSS runs training programs for other voluntary organisations and the government's health workforce.
We act as a Technical Resource Group for the Government of Chhattisgarh, the Planning Commission, and other agencies.
JSS has been involved in advocacy for primary health care and rational pharmaceutical policy, as well as highlighting the centrality of chronic hunger as India's most important and persistent public health problem.
We promote organic agriculture and practices capable of increasing agricultural yields like the system of rice intensification.
Phulwari Program
JSS runs a Phulwari program in which 35 Creches focusing on children under 3 years of age are being run with village support in the forest related villages with the aim of improving nutrition, and supporting the working parents.
